Once's Board / Re: What should be done about GM?
« on: December 29, 2011, 04:19:28 pm »
Something we might want to consider this is from Fallout series is to "tag" 2 classes and you get the benefits of those classes with the various masteries. It is still the same idea as the 8 remorts but you would get special bonuses for your tagged classes. Not sure if it fits in this discussion. Or maybe we could have special abilities which can be tagged from the classes.

For example:
1) If you tagged cleric you can have for example a bonus to healing spells or your buffing spells last longer (Remember this is off top of my head so it might not make sense right now)
2) If you tagged warrior you can have a bonus to your combat skills or you can have a bonus to your AC which makes you more of a defensive tank like character. Or you could choose more damage and be a damage dealing tank.

Prometheus.
I'm going avoid the trap of saying weather or not we should get rid of GM.

Lol figures Virisin would use Skyrim in an forum post. If we do skills trees it needs to be done right and gives people options. But otherwise .........

I'm pretty sure the max hit are actually hit points. The code might not be clear on it. But max hit is hit points not hitroll.

I'm going to work on getting a zip file of our version of mushclient working. Once I do I will include the link. Right now it is in heavy alpha testing phase. I'm trying to get all of the things set up correctly. But there might be some things can need to be done.

Another concern is that we have a couple of active voices and not many of other voices. Or the other voices get beat down by the active voices (I'm not going to name names you know who you are :)) And the attitude if you don't post your opinion doesn't count is bull as well. We need to encourage input and not worry about being beat down by the louder voices.

And that is the true problem of balancing things. You have one group who want things one way and damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead and the heck with anyone else posts or says. And we have others who might want to post but doesn't want to get ran over by the this is the only way group as well.

And then you have the coders who tend to go off on their own tangents and we don't talk to each other. I think we need to have coder meetings so we can keep tabs on each other so we don't step on each other's toes. So for example Once is working on gypsy's, I'm sort of working on gypsy's. This could cause issues. Which is the biggest issue we have as coders is that we tend not to talk to each other much. It doesn't mean we don't talk to each other it is just we are more independent coders.

And we need to respect each other on posting as well. Calling someone an idiot or blowing off an idea because you don't agree with it isn't the right way of handling it. Not everyone can debate well over a forum. We all need to be patient and try to understand what other people are trying to express.

Sort of makes sense to me.

But that brings up the question of what do we do with our mess of code we have now. Are we going to look at compressing it somewhat or just live with the mess we have now?

I will be honest I'm still not 100 percent on board with the stamina thing but I will wait and see how it pans out and to wait for some of the other active 4d players to input since I know others might have an objection as well. (Stupid weird keyboard making me mistype :) )

Molly you forgot potential p-wipe and cleaning up of the code in general (possibly a new code base which would be easier to code in and not with tons of files all over the place) I think most of the changes should be pushed into the next version of 4d since there are many new things we could do with starting over. I know it will be a b**** for builders if we use a new code base but with what we have it might be a better idea to start from scratch.

There is a crafting patch but it is for a different code base. This might be something Once or someone better at coding than I look into. But it does stomp on some of the skills we have in the game (brew is one that comes to mind)

But that is my 2 cents worth.

^ I'd thought the point of tinker was to use it on non magical weapons(Including hum / blessed / glowing). But I could be wrong.

We need to be careful not to alienate players with changing things around too much. I could see making stamina a bigger factor in the next version of 4d. Not sure how I feel on increasing stamina cost with what we have know. But as long as input is used wisely.......

I don't think the players mind minor changes but to throw in stamina when most players have tons of mana / movement. What is the point of having mana / movement. Why not just go the route Virisin suggested and make one pool for Mana and maybe another pool for movement / stamina for next version of 4d?

Don't forget there is more than one donation pit and I think the code splits where the items go if you donate something :)

And I agree it is a bad idea to make the donation pit crash proof.

^ I'm pretty sure DG scripts should have day / night times etc. But since I don't do much with DG I wouldn't know for sure. Maybe if someone who does know DG better could answer that?

And with the issues of the farming / lumberjack I'm guessing that a zone reset won't help?

My concern is if someone is on and the game is set to auto reboot and they die the corpse goes poof and then I or Thotter has to do a recovery. Which is why I'm leery about doing anything automatic. Now the question becomes is can we fix DG issues with a coding change via Thotter or Fizban? Or do we need to upgrade DG and then add our tweaks in. Or is it a mud memory issue which is something Once could fix.

Do we have to do a reboot everyday? Could we try every 3 days or so and see what happens? I can't see rebooting the mud once a day. We need to figure out a solution.
