Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Mounts, and Mount Skills
« on: June 04, 2009, 12:36:55 pm »
It's I love lamp. Get it right or pay the price. :-*

I thought that when I had initially bought my mount, that I paid for the tier 4 model.  She's certainly tier 2 now, however, and can't really hold up in any sort of combat situation. Like Toch, I mainly use the beast to spare my mv/stamina.
I'm sure there'd be drawbacks to having beastly mounts of power, but I'm not sure what they'd be.

If you've mastered a class, I don't see that it's very likely that you'd 'forget' a skill. I find that to be incredibly annoying.

Hey, I've got about a zillion extra practice points just gathering dust. Having something to dump them into might be nice. Rsay already exists, and would be a bit more tactful to use than whispering, which in a few social groups is considered quite rude. Saying that it doesn't work at all rp wise may be true, but does chittering? 'Tocharaeh chitters away in a language you don't understand like a fluffy squirrel'...really takes away from the whole chaotic evil drow thing.

Gringos don't necissarily have to speak english. They can be speaking a plethora of european languages. That's why, from what I've studied, they hated the Irish so much back in the old west. A lot of them refused to speak english, and were better at pharming their goldz!!! :-\

We could make it more useful by making a couple of languages for each race to represent the different subcultures that exist in the realms, but I fear that would be overcomplicating things. Simply replacing the 'chittering' with something that better represents each race's style of communication would suit me.
Whispering is no replacement for rsay, and adds absolutely nothing to the atmosphere but the feeling
of secrecy. If you don't want the room to hear what you're saying, use tells. It's less spammy.

Indians, as far as I know Sign Language was written by Spainards in the 17th Century actually. I don't know of Indians having an actual sign language system that provides them with a system to fully communicate. No, I would just give them something a little truer to their actual spoken language. I hate to say it, bt I'm never big on giving races more credit than their due, and Indians were certainly not a very mysterious people, nor very advanced.
While some of the earliest recorded works are indeed from the 1600's, that was developed directly to communicate with the deaf/mute.

The native americans from the west had a system of sign language set up to communicate with other tribes for the purpose of trade by the early 1800's. That would fit into the old west timeline. Whether they developed it, or whether it filtered up from Mexico isn't really the point. Despite their 'lack of mystery or advancement', they did in fact have a system of non verbal communication in place. Whether it's prudent to use it in the language script isn't really something I care enough to argue about. Just no chittering.

Roleplay / Once upon a fail
« on: May 11, 2009, 10:46:48 pm »
Kitolani watched a stealthy streak of black race by in her peripheral.
The shadow streaked along a dimly lit wall of dancing candlelight.

"What are you hunting today, good sir?", she asked without even looking up
from the pile of notes upon her desk.

"Space bandits, of course." came a quiet whisper from behind her chair.

"While galaxy protection is paramount, I believe it's time for you to hunt
some pajamas. It's way past your bed time."

An exasperated little sigh was the only reply.

"I've got work to do little chief, and you breaking things isn't going to
help me focus."

Kotori smirked. "You're always doing paperwork. You used to be fun. Ever
since you smoked yourself with that silly spell, you've been hiding." He
mused to himself and said with an earnest innocence, " I think the trick
is to call the lightning onto the bad guys and not to your face."

Kitolani spun around in her chair and grinned at the young drow. It'd been
four or five years or so since he was dropped into her lap. Seemed aeons.
He was so cute. Good thing too, it had helped him escape being vaporized by
Kito herself on several occasions. "Put that down!" was something she said
so much that the phrase had lost all meaning.

At least he listened to his casting teacher. Apparently, Kotori was good.
It came to him much more naturally than it did to Kitolani, who was
shuddering to the core that she was going to hurt somebody else with her
magic gone wrong. A stealthy stab between the shoulders was more her style.

"Leave the magic to the fairy godmothers." she'd snort. She didn't take
kindly to coming up short in anything, but people seldomly do.

Kotori swept into the room silently in his black ninja pajamas and jumped
into Kitolani's lap, sending them both spinning across the mahogany floor
in the chair. Kotori held out his hands and glowed blue as he glided the
wayward chair back to the desk, still spinning.

"Nice." smiled Kitolani as she ruffled the little drows wild white hair.

"Don't worry big chief," Kotori chirped, "I'll teach you how to do it."

Kitolani thanked the little drow heartily and ushered him down the dark
halls to his own quarters just a sprint from hers. The other members had
really taken kindly to the small drow now that he didn't screech loudly
all through the night, and he had become less of a topic of discussion
these days since the Spider thing never showed up to prove she was any
more than a terrible myth. Kitolani finally started sleeping again, and
even let him come hunting with her every now and again. Life was good,
except that the boy's father hadn't even seen the child...deadbeat.

Suggestions & Ideas / Dialect variation
« on: May 11, 2009, 05:00:14 pm »
I suggest that we have a bit more variation in rsay than 'You hear (player) chittering away in a language you don't understand.' Chittering would be an awesome verb for our Martian or Faun races, but I think that for dwarves or spacewolves, it doesn't really work. I think it'd be a relatively easy way to add atmosphere to the realms, just to change it up a bit.

My suggestions are as follows, and are definately incomplete:

Elves- Musical, eloquent, you know...
Dwarves- Robust, thick-tounged, earthen
Gringos- Do they even get an rsay for being so common?
Indians- I think they should both speak/use sign language.
Spacewolves- Barks, growls, etc.
Martians- Clicks pops and perhaps even chittering.
Centaurs- I say we make them neigh. -_-
Fauns- Perhaps some whimsical dialect?

Just an idea since I overhead some dwarves chittering away in recall and laughed at them...until I found out that I chittered too.  >:( Hrmph!

--Oh, and would it be possible to learn other languages for devious *cough* I mean...social purposes?

That, or go to Sherwood and get a wolf whistle.  :-\
There are many clans to choose from on 4d, but if you can't satisfy your character's
needs by joining one of them, being a loner is a very logical and respectable alternative.

So, out of curiosity, I was wondering who of you out there had character pictures that you'd be willing to share with the collective. It'd be a great way to put visages with names, and of course, I'm still curious to see what a centaur wearing pants looks like. Perhaps one of you can oblige.

I second that. I also come bearing threats both empty and terrible as to what will occur if you don't.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: space beacon's
« on: March 23, 2009, 01:53:01 pm »

Anyhow - I'd like some input on this.
Is 5 minutes waiting time too long? Too short?
Should the beacon load a spacesuit, when dropped?
Should the rescue ship check if the player is in a fight or not, or get him/her into the ship anyhow?

Is five minutes too long? No, it's much shorter than waiting to suffocate slowly and then waiting another hour or so for automeld. ;D

Should the beacon drop a space suit? I may sound mean and callouse, but I'd say no. They weigh 1lb, and
fit snuggly into any purse, pouch, satchel, or travellers backpack. After one trip to space where you suffer slowly, bleed and die you'll not soon forget to be prepared.

If the rescue ship does come and you've been intercepted by pirates, it should be a possibility that the rescue would fail miserably, splatting your hopes of rescue and forcing you once again to call for help. C'mon, how long was Giligan on that damned island before he was rescued? Or...did he die there...I forget.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Skill Tree System
« on: February 23, 2009, 11:29:52 pm »
Molly says:If the system can be implemented successfully, it might bring new interest for players that have more or less tired of the current game. But it could also turn out to be the last nail in the coffin, by losing the majority of our current players. It's a bit of a gamble.

I have to agree that it's a bit of a gamble to demolish the entire skill structure. After all, there are actually those of us that hang out for more than just the 10,000 different ways you can splat a mob or player.  Molly's post about the little tweaks on each of the existing classes had excellent ideas. Very '4d' in nature, and not too complicated to be added without some huge overhaul.
The premise of the game is so incredibly flexible that if you can't imagine that you're a ninja or neuromancer without the skillset, you don't deserve to be one. I can see a thief being an assassin, or also a misunderstood treasure hunter. The difference between the two doesn't lie in the set of skills you have, but rather in the way you decide to portray your character.  Everybody has the capacity to steal, some just choose the path of the honest merchant instead.
Ideas of grandure can be tossed around in moments of boredom, but I implore you to examine the jewel that you already have existing and merely buff it to a shine. What about making the various trades and professions easier for younglings to get started on? That would both encourage roleplay and stimulate the economy. Smuggling your loads of whatnot just to have enough tradepoints at the end of the day to fuel your starbike hardly seems like motivation, but I hear it's fun. It's gotta be better than the daily grind, no matter what new fancy skills you get to spam.
I'm not opposed to looking at skill trees and such, I just think that they should be lower on the list than more logical things like bugs in the current system that need to be fixed.

Oooh, I tried that out awhile back, and you're right. The waiting is ridiculous.
So ridiculous, in fact, that I never got back around to finishing my adventure.
