Fair point.

I was actually thinking of this idea - but didn't realize it would take that long!

1. New player joins MUD.

2. He creates an account.

3. Mud then stores the information: "account name" + "email address" somewhere, maybe a text file or something.

4. Forum checks this text file daily. If there's a new name there, create account with random password, and send via email to player.

And how long would it be before someone decides to invoke <whatever> in Olde Yorke?

new players will be exauhsted to fast to use retreat and bakstab.
guess i should clarified that before

Which is why I said something similar to retreat. Perhaps I should have clarified that it could be a skill that uses less movement? In any case, exhaustion happens if you spam retreat and backstab.

I do not know whether kick should just be the solution. My idea would be:

-A skill like retreat (at T1) which does not use as much movement / or a passive skill which cuts down movement loss.
-% of HP a mob should have or below before you cannot backstab. I'd say 10% at T1, 20% at T2, 35% at T3, and 50% at T4. Can have some reason like: "weak thieves do not seem to be a threat, so mobs tend to ignore them etc"
-Blackjack to be able to be used indefinitely on mobs which are the same level or below, without any lag time, and lag time for mobs which are of a higher level.

The result might actually get people playing the rogue classes in a style different from melee classes.

The purpose of adding kick to their skills for now is just to help the begginer players out, untill something else can be though of and added.

Having retreat would not really help a begginer at killing anything any faster.

You've obviously not used retreat in conjunction with thief classes then.

Would it be better to have a skill similar to retreat for Gypsy / Thief instead of kick, but perhaps at T1?

Why not have something that approves usernames which are names of players in the MUD automatically?

Could a re-evaluation of how DTs work (see other post) be of any use to this?

In the Medieval part of the 4D school, you would possibly have come across the greetings needed in all 4 dimensions.

Suggestions & Ideas / DT modification / one-time quests
« on: March 04, 2012, 05:04:35 pm »
There was some gossip at recall about DTs / one-time quests, so I would like to propose the following suggestions.

One time quests
should only be one-time for tokens, and infinitely many times if the quest gives equipment.

Deathtraps
could either:
a) Take one piece of equip only (like VE's death trap), or
b) Just kill the player like the Midland's one - and make corpse (plus items) recoverable via automeld / recover command
c) Just kill the player like the Midland's one, and make corpse (plus items) recoverable only via automeld. So a more advanced player would have to sit and wait out (or get a second set of equip if he/she wants to explore before being automelded)

I'd prefer something like b) or c).

The reason why I suggest this is because one of 4D's strength is in its unique quests and areas, and we players love to show off. But how do people know you've done one of the hardest quests, get the equip, and then walk into a DT (in a new area while exploring?) Then there's no bragging rights at all....

Only if it's done correctly. I get turned off by a lot of advertisements on forums for misc products which try to do that (unsuccessfully).

I'm not sure whether they still delete MUD entries now though - I read the thread about Threshold, and today you can see entries like Threshold MUD, LegendMUD on Wikipedia.

Aardwolf isn't there however. Of course, the thread also says that these MUDs never had a single player come from Wikipedia...

*Edit: Even if not, there's also http://mud.wikia.com/wiki/MUD_Wiki, which seems to lack an entry for 4 Dimensions.

We could always try, no harm done if it gets removed. For example, look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld_mud.

They have the unofficial backing of Terry Pratchett, but I wonder what would happen if say works of fiction were quoted as well, several players (if prominent enough) decide to give their real names and references *cough* Once. etc...

Suggestions & Ideas / 4D Wiki entry
« on: February 24, 2012, 08:51:51 pm »
I was talking to Once, and came up with an idea of a 4D wikipedia entry.

This entry should have lots of references so it won't be deleted by Wikipedia volunteers.

Idea: Players / Imms to post paragraphs of 4D history / references / etc, and then after a week or so, consolidate to Wikipedia. Good to give as many references as possible.

Possible references so far: Molly's articles on twinks / etc, awards won, zones which are historically accurate (Egypt, Greece), zones which are modelled after books (eg Keith Laumer's Retief), classics (Jekyll & Hyde / Sherlock Holmes), maybe if players are already on Wiki for another entry or famous can also put them in as famous people playing 4D. Etc etc etc.

To do: Players / Imms (particularly the old ones) to write history of 4D and/or provide references to cite!
