Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Official Golem Discussions Thread
« on: August 14, 2008, 04:56:53 am »
The other night, I was having a nice conversation with Rynock when suddenly his golem attacked either me or my golem. A fight persued. It was a blur but I think I was involved in the fight, not just my golem. He did later applogize...such a gentleman. Table Round should be proud!  :D

I'm eager to test this out --> if my golem can attack others. If it can, I think it's cool. It would be like PK without any risks.  You could track down a player and try to kill them and possibly actually kill them. Our fight didn't get that far so I don't know what the outcome would have been.

Beware anyone tomorrow who has an active golem. I'm going to get you...or die trying ;D

Also, the way you state it is that you just drop it and neglectfully quit and come back and buy it like its not a big deal. Im sorry, but your ACTIVE playerbase has little or no TPs to spend, so just pulling these TPs out of our butt isnt exactly easy at this point. If these end up costing 20 or more tps a pop, people will be careful with them.

I'm a fairly active player and I have well over 100 TP's to spend, which I think is nothing compared to what others have. I first discovered the excitement of TP's by exploring the Agean Islands in prehistoric. I was having a lot of fun with it and wanted to excel in TP gathering because I'm not that great in other areas and recognized that a lot of players don't go after TP's so I might get an edge that way. Unfortunately I got sidetracked with other things.

I agree that levelling golems is special and there are risks involved, and I also agree that it sucks to lose one though no fault of your own, but I don't think your TP argument holds water. If you can't afford it and having a golem is important to you, then go trade.

I too would like to see some sort of system where you could reactivate a dead golem. I'm not sure what it would look like, but if I took a golem all the way to Tier 4 and lost it, I would be swearing.

ps I normally agree with you Grish on every post and argument you've  ever made on this topic and other topics. I was almost asleep and worried that you might take my comment the wrong way. I love how you speak up for things and say it how it is.

There is no bait.

It surprises me that your reference seems even less credible than the first one posted. At least the other article tried to reference and interpreted the original source. Your reference is just a commentary – with an ad for a 40% off fall seat sale and blinking lights on an exclusive free report on Obama Exposed!

If the scientific community can’t agree, we are not going to agree here. But what does interest me is in the off chance you two are right (which you aren’t):  are we wasting money putting resources towards air care and wasting our breath opposing clear-cutting, etc. when the resources could be put towards other things, such as health care, education or employment. If there actually is no threat of global warming, we just carry on polluting? Is that the plan?

I should have asked this at the time, but it sill bugs me because I'm not sure if it refers to me.

Quote:
Well, as a seperate question, what can players (or IMMs for that matter) do when players start to:
b) Chase away newbies by giving them false information while sounding helpful
End Quote

I'm not the best player and so my information might not be to accurate and I have no sense of direction so my directions are crap, but if there is a newbie question over the newbie channel and there are no helpers or GMs or heros or imms on line or if they are AFK and not responding, then I try to answer it to the best of my ability. I usually wait a few minutes until I'm sure no one answers and then answer. I usually qualify my answer by saying this is what I think but it might not be accurate and confirm with a helper later.

I don't think I've chased anyone away with inaccurate information. I may have. But now I find myself really warry and nervous if I'm doing the right thing by responding on the newbie channel. Are you suppose to shut it off after you get to Tier 2? Would imms, heros and helpers prefer players aren't responding on the newbie channel?

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Idea for corpse sacing
« on: August 03, 2008, 03:13:48 am »
My comment might be slightly off topic, but it drives me absolutely insane to go to an area and find it littered with corpses and objects. I actually don't mind the corpses so much as I mind all the stuff stewn about all over the place. I feel compelled to begrudgingly clean up the mess. I'm not that tidy of a person but it drives me crazy. I know that's my problem and other people don't mind the mess.

A little reward of a few movement points or whatever is good; but maybe in addition to rewarding people for sacrificing mobs/items, there should be a punishment for those who litter. I'm not serious, but to those people who dump stuff on the ground and leave it there...please stop littering and keep the world clean. And, to those people who knowingly drop quest enabling items within the quest zone, shame on you.

Suggestions & Ideas / Code Updates
« on: August 03, 2008, 02:17:11 am »
Quote:
At a suggestion from IWKU I'm going to try to post bug changes / updates here and I will hope the other coders will do so as well. Here is the current list:
A) Nauzhror changed the tier and level of the following spells / skills:
mana shield, brace, parry
B ) Nauzhror fixed scribe so that you need to know the spell to scribe it.
C ) Typo fixes.
End Quote

Thank you Prometheus.

Whether changes are conveyed through in-game change notes or on the forum boards, what matters most to me is understanding the change. For example in (A), was mana shield, brace and parry spells/skills increased or decreased? What prompted this change or how does this change affect things, etc.

Just reading something was "changed" doesn't really mean much to me. I would find it helpful if coders could briefly say how something was changed. It doesn't have to be lengthy. (B) and (C) are good examples of this. Otherwise, I just read the note, don't understand it and don't really care if it doesn't affect me.  Having this information on the boards though would be great because then if at some point it does affect me, then I can go back and find a reference to it. In-game change notes are good, but are only sent to current players so new players are not able to access that information.

I do appreciate all the hard work the 4D coders do. But to put all that work into making a change, and not have people understand it seems like a waste, when they could just write one sentence what the change means.

Your source of proof is the “Men’s News Daily”? Please.

The MND’s article incorrectly states there is “mathematical proof that there is no climate crisis”. Using words such as “published” in debate … in Physics and Society, a “scientific publication” of the 46,000-strong “American Physical Society” (APS) makes it sound like this was a scientific work published in a respected journal, when in fact is just an opinion article in one of their online newsletter forums. The APS states “This newsletter is not a scientific journal of the APS, and it is not peer reviewed”.

This is the link to the original article:
http://www.aps.org/units/fsp/newsletters/200807/monckton.cfm

(1)   The article is not a proper scientific study so it cannot be proof. It is an opinion of the author. The article is not held up to any sort of statistical analysis and the author is unable to state any conclusion with any level of confidence. The article abstract states, …”the conclusion is that perhaps there is no “climate crisis”.

(2)   The article does not have support from the APS. A press release from the APS (July 22/08) states “American Physical Society (APS) today reaffirmed its position on climate change issued last November, releasing the following statement “Emissions of greenhouse gasses from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate. The evidence is incontrovertible. Global warming is occurring”. “The society’s position has not changed, and APS remains engaged in the issue that has considerable international consequences”.

This is a link to the APS Media response to the original article:
 http://www.aps.org/about/pressreleases/climatechange08.cfm

You quoted Lord Monckton’s conclusion in the article “The correct policy approach to a non-problem is to have the courage to do nothing”. While that statement in itself is true, he cannot apply it to global warming being a non-problem because he can’t draw any conclusions because he didn’t conduct a proper study.

The article in the MND’s is scary because there will be people reading it who will take it at face value and believe it to be true. Let’s say it were true, does that mean we should not bother with annual air care car emissions tests, not worry about clear-cutting our forests, throw away our blue boxes and stop recycling, take the car when we can walk, and stop designing energy-efficient communities and transportation systems? Maybe it would mean that, or it could result in an easy excuse not to take better care of our Earth.

I’m sure we can all start citing real studies about global warming, but I agree that mud forums are not the place to discuss politics.

I do not think it would be fair to have a formal group of players interpreting the MUDs "unwritten rules" and "unwritten policies" and then making decisions about a players behaviour and taking action against a player based on "unwritten rules" and "unwritten policies".

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Trainer List of Skills and Spells
« on: July 12, 2008, 04:09:02 am »
I would agree that it would be a mistake not to post the trainer/zone for behead and cleave, or for any skill/spell for that matter.

My experience with this new system has been limited because I was a Tier 4 thief when it started, and I am still a Tier 4 thief, and so I only had to find one or two trainers. One of the trainers I had to find was for encircle. I was initially opposed to the new system, especially when the clue for the encircle skill was .... well, no clue. The trainer could be anywhere in any dimension.

To me, such vagueness wasn't much fun or challenging. It was just frustrating and made me feel like calling it quits. When the zone where the encircle trainer was announced, it was a challenge because that zone was huge but it was fun. I tried stuff I never had before (like flying my own spaceship). I found a new really cool area, a really intriguing quest, a flag and got a token. And as a side bonus I encounted a few people on my travels to find where these skill trainers were and got into a conversation with them - something that wouldn't have happened otherwise. Those experiences made me warm somewhat to this new system.

The goal of the system is to get people exploring. So why single out hunters and warriers who might want to try behead or cleave? Why make it so difficult? If finding trainers is too hard, people just might bypass those skills and level on and then if they reach GM they won't even know what those skills are like and if they want to chose that class. Or even if they don't reach GM, they will miss out on some fun things of a class. Or, they might just say to themselves, this is stupid and too much of a hassle.

Anyway Virisin as far as encircle being overpowered...maybe it is, maybe not. But you lose kick when you reach level 4 thief so unless you have a mount that can trample you pretty much just sit there helpless and watch the fight on the screen scroll by. Encircle is essential! And behead and cleave are probably just as essential.

So my vote is for the more information the better.

I may have mentioned this before but I can't remember the answer.

The 'advertisement' or description of 4D on the TMS ranking list states "A mud where success is not only determined on your RL wallet or how much time you spend bashing mobs".

The way I read this is that your RL wallet has some determination on your success.  Clicking the info button provides information that the game is "totally free - no pay-for-perks or hidden costs", but some people might not click on the button if they get the impression that there are some costs involved in playing.

I would suggest taking out the word 'only' so it would read "...success is not determined on your RL wallet...".

Sure I believe the weather has been getting increasingly warmer, and it may have an affect overtime, but no I don't think it's going to melt the polar caps and destroy all life as we know it, I'm not a conspiracy theorist.
/quote]

The weather has not only been getting increasingly warmer but more erratic.  There are more tsunamies, hurricanes, forest fires and heat waves of more epic proportions than ever before. The ice cap IS melting and will destroy life as we know it.

Just as a small example, for Father's Day we had lobster.  Soon the ocean water will be too warm and too watery (less saline) that the lobsters will die. And there's tons of potential medical cures in the ocean that will die with it.

The Kyoto Protocol isn't the cure but it's a step in the right direction. I don't understand why the US won't agree.  They are world leaders and there are no global penalties if you don't meet the agreement. It's just an agreement to try and to care and to take small steps towards reducing GHG's.

And there is no conspiracy. Global warming is a sad fact.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Concept for Enhancing Clans
« on: June 12, 2008, 06:48:41 pm »
I am assuming that clans will be allowed to keep all their existing exists, and that the new entrance/exit will be free since this is an imm imposed decision vs an individual clan request.  Can the new entrance/exit be made so that mounts (groups) can go through them? And out of curiosity, how do clans currently without exits leave their clan hall? Use a recall scroll each time?

I am strongly against clan halls being open for non-members to enter whenever they wish.  Clans are like private, restricted membership clubs and in real life such clubs are not open to the public, and it makes no IC sense to do it in the game. And it would be really annoying if you are having a meeting or talking to a clan member or waiting for your corpse and some yahoo comes strolling through your clan hall.

I like the idea of barriers being removed from clan halls for clans who are at war.   Will non-pk clan members be allowed to try to kill intruders?

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: PK
« on: June 04, 2008, 09:18:58 pm »
I wasn't arguing that you would go one-loot pk because you liked it more. I was saying that if everyone decided to chose one-loot pk that it might tell you something - that maybe people would prefer to go pk and just lose one item.

And DJ's don't have a male/female rule regarding pk.  The dark side always offers choices.

I'm done with this conversation.
