I am officially looking for input on races.

What do we do with them?

Personally I hate them all and think they should go, but that's what this thread is here to discuss.

Right now characters are basically pigeonholed into a style of play before they even know how to play thanks to the attributes their race has.  For example an elf like myself has +speed, +magic damage and +attack, and then less melee damage and defense to compensate.

That doesn't make me any stronger or weaker (theoretically), just less flexible, which seems silly in a world with so much wonderful potential for flexibility.

Beyond that there are also imbalances between the races and whispered rules about which ones are the best and worst and so on.  For something basically set in stone that's a flaw.

(Don't get me started on the flimsy Gringo/Indian premise, and of all the possible aliens out there we chose furries and martians..?  All the rest... meh.  But that's neither here nor there.)

Possible solutions to the actual mechanics:

Remove race attributes, leaving all with a horizontal base a la gringo/indian.  This would be easy and I think it should be done.

Add an inbuilt mechanic along the lines of a bioengineering lab for changing race.  That's also easy and also should be looked at ASAP in my opinion.

Beyond that, a bioengineering/cybernetics lab would open up a lot of options for race/character augmentations available to EVERYONE and not decided upon at creation.  I think a set of chop&changeable wear_locs would be a good solution to imbalances between races (aside from neutering the attributes that is) and also quite cool.

What are peoples' thoughts?

there's already a sign at the end of Venture Ave with zones for under lvl30.

beyond that there is:
convent
osten ard/northern realms
odessin
little italy
quixotica
probably stone age 2 and dry gulch 2
maybe tombstone or hole in the wall - i've never levelled there but it's an interesting journey anyway.
necromunda - there's some solid equipment there as well
parts of alpha centauri (lovenbroy and slunch probably)
maybe poon ocean

a lot of those have aggro mobs and such but they might as well get used to it.  adds a sense of adventure too.  beyond the obvious newbie/tier 1 levelling it all gets a bit hazy i feel, and dependent on personal preferences.

to be honest i think the main problem is that our skills/spells/fight code is so shit.  once you realize such a massive part of the game is typing 'k mob', kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick... you get the idea.  i don't have a solution for that yet, just pointing it out.

I think Molly's description of the clans should be copied to the 4D Clans section of the website.  There's nothing there at present.

Seems like people want the timers to go.  I agree.

If they can be fixed so they can't be hoarded that's great, but I care less about hoarding than about arti's being a waste of effort anyway.

Even when they were all hoarded and none loaded there was a mythology around artifacts that made the game more interesting.

But it seems like the offline timer combined with flags to prevent storage anywhere outside of potential player shops would work a treat. Best of both worlds :D

Subraces are a dumb idea.

Why not get rid of set races, let people choose a selection of wear-locs and attributes and then call themselves what they like?

That solves balance issues and I can't think of a problem with it.

Edit: doesn't stop you having Afflictions either.
